Work Environment (Part II)

In previous post I quoted some of the possible courses that you can study if you want dediaros the environment. First of all I have to apologize, because among so many qualifications, I forgot one of the most important (environment):

Marine Sciences. Marine Science is a career for those who love the sea and water environments. Not only is marine biology, marine environment can also be studied from many different points, such as physics, chemistry, geology ... Marine Sciences offers a multidisciplinary view of all them.

if you are aware, there are a lot of qualifications (and all modules without higher education) that deal with the environment. Traditionally have been distributing different job profiles in this field, the need to create a new qualification that aims at unifying this knowledge was evident. This is not to say that other environmental professionals were not good enough, only one run was needed to collect the different approaches to get a professional "compact." From this idea was born, just over 10 years, a new degree: Bachelor of Environmental Science .

You see, one of the problems of the approach to environmental awareness is that the environment is practically everything. It has three pillars: the biological environment, physical environment and social environment. Biological media are animals, plants, fungi, bacteria, but also communities, ecosystems ... the physical environment is all natural that is not alive, like water, soil, rocks, climate, atmosphere ... and the social environment are the people, how they live and how they behave in and to the environment environment.

This is reflected in the curricula of Environmental Sciences. As core subjects (which are those that have to be taught compulsorily regardless of the university in that study) are both biology and the physical environment and social media. A good environmentalists must know both the different phyla of marine animals, such as the functioning of a cell, such as estimating water reserves in a particular area, such as interpretation of climate data, and knowledge of the lithology, such as the ability to interpret sociological behavior, understanding notions of economy or much right. Here you have a list of core subjects.

So there are a number of subjects, let's call "general environmental Culturilla ." Apart from the core, universities can also bring their own subjects of their own, are called mandatory. The university, which has traditionally has been to adjust these compulsory courses it already had. For example, if the university already had a large staff in biology, because they put more science, for example.

Then, apart from the subjects' overall environmental Culturilla , there are other courses on applied aspects such as Environmental Impact Assessments, Waste Management, Natural Resources Management ... although there is room for tools and environmental studies, such as Geographic Information Systems, or mapping.

Each university distributes the credits (hours) as he thinks fit. Some universities do more stress upon some subjects than others. In general, do not think you can say that universities are better or worse and there are enough schools across the geography to choose what suits us. Here a map of Universities in Environmental Sciences.

Interestingly, some universities require a Master Thesis Project for the title. Universities are usually 4-year plans. (There are plans to study for four years and five years, there is no difference in the title and going are you going to get to learn the same.) Here you have a list of universities with final year project. In principle there is something you have to frighten, the proposed limit can be a good approach to the real world, but be careful, try to take cognizance of the facilities the university offers for the project. The best way is trying to get in contact with students or graduates of that university.

There is a good network of provincial and regional associations of Environmental Sciences. It can be a good place to check. For example, in Andalusia is the FACCAA (Andalusian Federation of Environmental Sciences) that brings together the provincial associations. A good google query can guide you. Although there is a pretty good portal on environmental sciences: CienciasAmbientales.Com . There you can find most of the information I have, and many more. You also have the forum on the same page, for more specific queries. I look

this have resolved some doubts. I have yet to talk a little about careers, but we'll leave for later. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask it either by email or by comment.

Work Environment (Part I)

Summer is approaching and as every year, for some it's time to make an election that may determine their lives. In much of the English regions, have already taken the entrance exam students 2nd year in other communities will do next week. It is a moment of nervousness, joy, but above all, decisions. To time out the notes, the college will have to decide what career to choose, I know, is not an easy decision. Therefore I will give a few tips.

1. Do not be influenced by what others tell you if you already have clear what you want to study.

2. If you have not decided, and you are torn between several races, read all you can about them, and above all, try to contact students (ideally in recent years) or graduates / engineers of the same order that you comment on what they are from outside.

3. Interesaros curricula for both the university that I caught close as others. Try to find out what is given them.

4. do not use the cut-off mark as a criterion to choose the race, if you prefer to study one thing, put it in the first place. Every year, often cutting down the notes of many degrees, and so this year I dropped the fig.

5. And above all, do not worry. If you discover you do not like what you are studying you can always change the title. Anyway, it's much better to give him a second chance.

Well, I will I can talk about what I know, as almost a degree in Environmental Science from the University of Malaga. So I'm going to comment on my career.

First of all, tell you that if you want to work on the environment, there are many options you can choose, and none is absolutely better or worse, we are all specialized or focused in a particular way. Even many degrees share common subjects. This, I repeat, does not make them better or worse. In the end what matters are the professionals, not racing. A brief review of other options (such as university)

Biology: biology studies living organisms at various levels of complexity. Of course one of them is at the ecosystem level. If you like animals and plants is a good choice. I know biologists working in reintroduction of species, creation of catalogs of wildlife, hunting management ... and against (but not one against itself), who have enough charge in biochemistry, molecular biology, cytology and histology ... apparently have little relationship to the environment. It need not be. It gives a complete overview biological systems. Veterinary

: Vets are not only those men who care for pets when they are sick. Many can be dedicated to wildlife care, or even manage populations, such as game species.

Forestry and Forestry Engineering : the first technique (3 years) and the second upper (5 years), foresters have a version of "engineering" of ecosystems. Things like estimation of forest resources (for example, knowing how much wood can produce a mountain), hydrological repairs (building dikes to prevent erosion, for example), forest lanes, fire ... Like any engineering, are often harder to get, but with a highly trained sales to work in Forestry. As against ... well, are engineers, not that it is a defect, or anything, but apply the theorem "is a forest ball."

Agricultural Engineering: similar to above, but dedicated to agriculture and food world. Optimization of crop management, livestock, and even .... make delicious cheese.

Chemical Engineering: Chemical engineers design chemical plants, but not all. Also sewage systems, emissions cleaning, remediation of soil and groundwater ...

Engineering Public Works and Highways : the first technique and the second superior. Are the engineers who designed major infrastructure such as roads, pipelines, ports ... like any big infrastructure, there is a big change in the environment. So it's important to be aware of environmental issues. At last, after all, a great evils great remedies.

Architecture: An architect not only designs houses, also designed neighborhoods and cities. The choice of model city (urban) is quite important because that must be provided with appropriate mobility services, healthcare, welfare ... and clear environment.

Industrial Engineering: machine design, there are many specializations. The search engine more efficient models, for example, is closely related to the environment. And of course, are also renewable energy.

Geology: aside engineering, geologists are very knowledgeable about the physical environment. The physical environment is anything that is not alive, not only the stones (sorry, rocks), but also water and soil. Management of mineral resources, estimate water reservoirs, or geological hazards are some of the things they do related to the environment. In any case, is a step long career field.

Geography: no, I do not mean knowing the capitals of the countries. Although it is a race of letters (and I note that you will not be the last I will comment), geography studies the territory and populations. Other than that, have a good handle on Geographic Information Systems (eye, are not the only ones).

Law: another letter. Okay, if you go to law school, you will get between chest and back many things that are not at all related to the environment environment, but there is a law in environmental issues, and each time is growing. So an important exit is to specialize in environmental law.

Well, stop ... there are many other races from which you can specialize in environmental science from virtually any, can be physical environment (the meteorologists are physical, for example), chemical environment (including analytical chemistry), math (making models mathematicians, for example), even medicine (public health is also part of the environment).

races also " letters "as psychology and pedagogy (environmental education) or Economy (yes, the economy, many large environmental measures such as Kyoto, have been made by economists, in fact, it is not uncommon to find with a senior economist).

Well, sure I've left a thousand zillion races. I apologize in advance. As you can see there is a very wide range of possibilities. The environment encompasses many fields, so it is normal that those fields have some expertise in the environment.

You know, there are many options. In the next post, I will comment about my career (Environmental Science)

Note to potential alluded : The order in which I have put almost random (I have been putting as I remember), and of course, sure I could make a mistake. If so, do not hesitate to me know and will be repaired. Please, I would not want this to become a pitched battle over what degree is better, I've seen elsewhere. We are all in the same boat, and therefore we have to learn to row together.

World Environment Day

Dear readers Shrodinger box today, June 5, is World Environment day, one day chosen by members of the United Nations, to promote awareness of the need to conserve the environment, this year dedicated to Thaw. That is why we decided to dedicate some lines.

The election of June 5 is not entirely arbitrary, and arguably is the birthday of Environmental Conservation, at least as we understand it today. The sixties rescaca spent in the Green Revolution (the discovery of new chemicals, mainly pesticides like DDT, which allowed a considerable increase in production on arable land), but began to notice some strange symptoms. For example, birds that were unable to take flight, suffering from a strange trembling. Or soft-shelled eggs and chicks were not viable. The birds had already been identified as key species in pest control. Not only were the birds. Wealthy people began to suffer from gastric diseases, more characteristic of sites with poor hygiene. Marsico turns out that he was intoxicated with pathogenic bacteria from sewage discharges. These cases and many others, fed the awareness that something was wrong with the environment.

course had previously conservation measures, eg in the post natural areas commented that Yellowstone goes back to the nineteenth century, and of course that existed prior awareness. But surely the milestone that we look back today marked a before and after in Conservation.

On June 5, 1972 began the United Nations a conference on human environment, and what better place to celebrate than in the city of Stockholm. At that congress was signed today known as the Stockholm Declaration .

The Stockholm Declaration is not binding (do not pass such laws in the signatory countries) only gives recommendations. On this statement is anchored almost all of the principles of environmental law.
1. Man is both creature and moulder of his environment, which gives him physical sustenance and affords him the opportunity to develop intellectually, morally, socially and spiritually.
In the long and tortuous evolution of the human race on this planet has reached a stage where, thanks to the rapid acceleration of science and technology, man has acquired the power to transform, in countless ways and in a unprecedented scale, the surroundings.

The two aspects of the human environment, natural and artificial, are essential for well-being and the enjoyment of fundamental human rights including the right to life itself.
In this first point, it points out the importance of environment, support for the survival and welfare of mankind, but man's capacity for modification, may endanger the welfare of human being itself.
4. In developing countries, most environmental problems are caused by underdevelopment. [...] Therefore, developing countries must direct their efforts towards development, bearing in mind their priorities and the need to safeguard and improve the environment.

[...] In industrialized countries, environmental problems are generally related to industrialization and technological development.
An interesting point of this part, is that it includes aid to underdeveloped countries as part of an international environmental policy.
6. We have reached a moment in history when we must shape our actions throughout the world with a more application to the implications they have for the environment.

Through ignorance or indifference, we can cause massive and irreversible harm to the earthly environment on which depend our lives and our welfare.

By contrast, with a fuller knowledge and wiser action, we can get to us and our posterity a better life in an environment more in tune with the needs and aspirations of human life.

prospects of improving the quality of the environment, to create a satisfying life are great. What is needed is enthusiasm, but, calm state of mind work and intense but orderly.

To reach the fullness of their freedom in nature, man must use knowledge to build, in harmony with them a better environment.
The goal is not to preserve and conserve, but to allow greater good of the human. Economic and social development must be compatible with environmental preservation: Development is Sustainable.
7. To reach this goal will demand that citizens and communities, businesses and institutions at all levels to accept their responsibilities and that all sharing equitably in common efforts.

is the responsibility of all governments, businesses and citizens, preservation of natural environment. This lays the principles of Participation and Accountability. The environment is a common, highly vulnerable and therefore need protection. This protection will be tutored by the government, but everyone must participate.

addition to the points, the account statement also has 24 principles, in which member countries agree to participate (although as we have said is not binding).

I recommend reading this letter, it is neither too long nor too complicated, and are clearly reflected the principles of environmental law, of which we in the box below Shrodinger.

There is a story quite curious about this statement, although I'm not entirely convinced of its truth, yet they said if anyone can confirm. It turns out that the term environmental Castilian emerged from this letter. When translating from English Environment , translator found in the dictionary Environment, Environment (both are synonyms), did not see the point and it left him as Environment (which translates literally into English would Environment Environment). Whether it is correct or not ... because I prefer not to use environment. It is much more appropriate to use only part (or Medium or Environment). But still persists Environment (as a general thing) and Middle or for particular ecosystems Environment (Marine Environment, Urban Environment).
